The American Optometric Association recommends children receive their first eye examination at 6 months and then again at age 3. Unless the doctor tells you otherwise the next examination is recommended at age 5. Dr. Jay strongly recommends that every school aged child receives an eye exam yearly to ensure that they are ready for the school year. Such a high percentage of learning is visual that our children need to see well to perform their best in school. A school vision screening may detect if your child is nearsighted (myopic) but most school screenings do not test for farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism or lazy eyes or any of a number of other problems with the visual system which may affect school performance.
